There are many benefits to being a traveler. Some of the most obvious ones include the large weekly paychecks, tax-free stipends, the ability to travel the country, and the freedom to take time off in-between assignments. These are definitely the primary reasons most of us hit the road. In addition to this, there are other--not often advertised--- benefits that most travelers could be taking advantage of. Many of these are covered by your travel agency, but only if you know to ask for them.
Scrub Reimbursement
Some assignments may require you to wear a specific color depending on your department, floor, shift, etc. If this is the case, you may be eligible for a free pair of scrubs. Ask your recruiter if the agency offers scrub reimbursements, and how much. Many agencies will happily cover the cost up to $100-$150 per contract. This small additional reimbursement can help alleviate some of the overhead costs we incur while relocating assignment locations, plus, who doesn't like a new pair of scrubs?
CEU Reimbursement
We all need to maintain our education and licensures with Continuing Education Units. This is another expense that we can pass on to our agency. Whenever you sign up for your next round of CEUs be sure to keep the receipt. Just send a copy to your agency the next time you submit your weekly timesheet. This miscellaneous expense will simply be reimbursed on your next paycheck.
Licensure Reimbursement
Not only are your CEUs covered, but the cost of any licensure required for an assignment should be reimbursed as well. No matter if it is for national or state level certification, your agency should cover the bill if it is a necessary certification for your contract. Even if you need to renew your ACLS or BLS/CPR certification, your agency will cover the charge. This is just one of the many small perks to being a traveler.
Many agencies offer these benefits to travelers, but don't actively advertise it. Next time you talk with your recruiter, ask them if your agency will cover any of the previously mentioned items. If they do, be sure to save those receipts. When you do submit them to your agency, it's always a good idea to notify your recruiter ahead of time. This will help ensure that your reimbursements go through payroll without any issues.
