Lately there has been a lot of talk about people returning to permanent positions because travel contracts "no longer pay what they used to". While it is true that rates are returning to pre-COVID times, traveling still has so much more to offer than just great pay. Some of the reasons many of us started traveling and still continue to to take assignments are as follows:
Freedom to work when you want
One of the primary benefits of traveling is the freedom it offers. Travelers have the ability to work when they want and take off extended periods of time without waiting for PTO approval. This allows for greater flexibility in scheduling and can be a huge advantage for those who have family commitments or other obligations outside of work. Many travelers time their contracts to end right before a significant date so that they are guaranteed the time off. This is perfect for taking a vacation or spending the holidays with family.
Explore new parts of the country
Another benefit of being a traveler is the opportunity to explore new parts of the country that you wouldn't otherwise have thought to visit. Travelers are often sent to healthcare facilities in rural or remote areas, giving them the chance to experience different parts of the country and meet new people along the way. These locations are oftentimes our favorites and offer the fondest memories.
Make new friends.
One of the best things about traveling is the opportunity to meet new people at work and make new friends across the country. Travelers often work alongside other healthcare professionals who are also on travel assignments, and this creates a unique sense of camaraderie and community. Many travelers report that the friendships they make while on assignment are some of the most rewarding aspects of their job.
Learn new skills and improve your resume.
Finally, traveling provides an opportunity to learn different techniques in your field and greatly sharpen your resume. As a traveler, you are exposed to different healthcare systems, policies, and practices, which can expand your knowledge and skillset. This exposure to different techniques and approaches can make you a more well-rounded healthcare professional and can make you more competitive in the job market.
As you can see there are still so many reasons to travel. The experiences, people,
memories, and sense of freedom you get is often the best aspect of this lifestyle. In the comment section below, please share with us why you love to travel and where you're headed next.
